New York passes San Francisco as top tech city for first time

New York passes San Francisco as top tech city for first timeNew York passes San Francisco as top tech city for first timeWhat is a tech city?A tech city is defined by the extent technology plays in its economic trajectory. More specifically Real estate brokerage, Savills Plc defines a successful tech city by the will of six key factors Business Environment, Tech environment, City Buzz and Wellness, Talent swimming-pool, Real estate costs, and mobility. So who came out on top?New York named leading tech cityNew York citys healthy litter of 7,000 startups makes it a global leader in the tech industry. In 2017, New York racked up $12 billion dollars in venture capital funding. The hubs extensive talent pool has already lured giants like Amazon and Spotify, and saw Google beef up its presence in Manhattan.Scale is something New York can offer when youre employing so many people, so theres a real advantage there for large tech companies, saidTostevin, Associate Director of World Research for Savills, in a statement.Julie Samuels, executive director of Tech New York, believes New Yorks cultural institutions, neighborhoods connected by public transit, restaurants, and bars are the fundamental qualities that define it as a healthy ecosystem and successfully counterbalance its poor score for real-estate costs. The citys tech industry employs about 320, 000 people, a number likely to increase if the 4,500 computer science majors birthed from its surplus of 120 universities have anything to say about it.For the first time in the three iterations of Savills rankings, New York beat out San Francisco as the leading tech city. Unlike New York, which experienced a considerable increase in Venture capital investments, San Fransicos VC, was flat from last year.New Yorks spike in VC was due to the funding garnered by co-working space company WeWork. San Franciscos cost of living has also become astronomically high.

How to encourage positive collaboration on team projects

How to encourage positive collaboration on team projectsHow to encourage positive collaboration on team projectsTeam projects at work can be hard enough, but how you act can have a big impact.Heres what to do.Dont have meetings just to have themThis is never a good idea.Dan Schawbel, an author and columnist, writes on QuickBase that when leading and working with teams, you should hold effective meetings. Most teams waste time during meetings catching up about personal things. Before you start a meeting, have a reason for it. Then, tell each individual team member what they need to bring to each meeting and set an agenda. This way, you can measure the success of a meeting, he writes. Dont feel like the meeting has to be an hour or two hours make it mora about the tasks at hand because the more time people spend in the meeting, the less time they have to do work, he writes.Treat people wellUse the Golden Rule.Author and entrepreneur Kevin Daum writes on Inc.com that people who collabor ate well at work are people who work with respect.Few go into a collaborative project with intentions of being disrespectful yet it often happens, verbally or non-verbally. Disrespect is shown by being late, missing deadlines, being unprepared, hogging the conversation, quiet politeness or distraction by irrelevant discussion. If everyone shows respect by focusing each minute of activity on the common objectives of the group, the required time will be short and the results will be plentiful.Give people room to breatheIt really pays to do this.Susan M. Heathfield, an HR expert, writer, professional facilitator, management and organization development consultant, trainer and speaker, writes in The Balance about how team members should feel free to speak their minds. The team creates an environment in which people are comfortable taking reasonable risks in communicating, advocating positions, and taking action. Team members trust each other. Team members are not punished for disagreeing disagreement is expected and appreciated.Make valuable contributionsDont just stand there.Marty Brounstein, author of Managing Teams for Dummies, writes on the Dummies website that someone who collaborates well on the job functions as an active participant.Good team players are active participants. They come prepared for team meetings and listen and speak up in discussions. Theyre fully engaged in the work of the team and do not sit passively on the sidelines, he writes. Team members who function as active participants take the initiative to help make things happen, and they volunteer for assignments. Their whole approach is can-do What contribution can I make to help the team achieve success?

You may actually be allergic to your office because of this

You may actually be allergic to your office because of thisYou may actually be allergic to your office because of thisGood news. The weather is starting to get warmer. The bad news? Soon you will be sitting in a freezing cold office with the AC cranked up to what seems like a ridiculously high level and wearing a puffy coat.Yes, on those hot, nass summer days it is great to come in from your sweaty commute to a nice, cool office except after 20 minutes you are all cooled off and then you begin to freeze. And for one woman that strong office AC became detrimental to her health. The woman began to break out in hives when the AC welches turned up and after a visit to the doctor she was diagnosed withcold urticaria AKA she is allergic to cold temperatures and objects and therefore her office. Cols urticaria is a rare condition (less than 3% of the population has it) but it does exist and occurs most frequently in young adults. According to The Mayo Clinic, symptoms can vary but includepeo ple breaking out in hives, swelling of the hands and/or lips, in cold temperatures or coming in contact with something cold. In worse cases, a person can develop low blood pressure, faint or even go to shock after swimming in cold water. So you may legitimately be allergic to your office environment if any of this sounds familiar. There is no real cure for the condition, and sometimes it just goes away on its own, but treatment includesNondrowsy antihistamines andOmalizumab. Though this may be the key to getting a bunch of work from home days this summer, do consult with your doctor before self-diagnosis.As for what the rest of us can do who dont have cold urticaria, and are just regular cold and therefore whiny, try the following tips.1. Layer Layer LayerGet an office sweater or light jacket you can just keep at work. Your feet and legs can also get coldso consider a pair of warm slippers to wear (just under your desk) or bring back the 80s with some leg warmers.2. Wrap it upTry a f estive summer scarf or take one of those winter scarves out of storage and wrap it around your neck as a lot of heat is lost through that area.3. Embrace the dark sideThough summer is a time to sport some bright colors you may want to save some all black outfits for the office so you can absorb some of the heat in your office (if there is any.)If you feel your office is too cold you can also citeresearchthat found when an offices temperature was raised to 77 degrees from 68, typing errors fell by 44% and output increased by around 150%.

Y7 Studio Founder Sarah Larson Levey made yoga different with her classY7 Studio Founder Sarah Larson Levey made yoga different with her classThere is no question that yoga can be super beneficial to your career. It can help you focus better, improve the way you interact with your coworkers, improve your work-life balance (and actual balance) and just make you a mora enlightened person overall. But you know what? No matter how fun my yoga leggings are, sometimes it is just so boring after a long day at work to go sit in a silent or quiet room and try to put your foot behind your neck (and watch yourself fail at it in a giant mirror.) But Y7 Studio co-founder Sarah Larson Levey wanted to change the stereotypical image of yoga. After moving to New York at 22 to work in fashion she had been frustrated by the yoga classes available and feeling like they werent fun or challenging enough. Starting with a small pop-up in Williamsburg, Brooklyn she and husbandMason Levey turned the idea of wha t a yoga class should be on its head. I love music and movement. Yoga welches something I was always drawn to but was turned off by the exclusivity of the classes I was attending.Y7isa combination of all the things I wanted to experience in a class, Larson Levey told Ladders. There are no mirrors or bright lights or weird airy, flowy music in a Y7 class. It is just you, your sweat (fromthe infrared heat blast) and some truly bumpin beats (any workout class that includes Snoop Dogs Drop It Like Its Hot is good in my book.)Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Drake, Lil Wayne, Chris Brown, and Beyonce are regularly in the music rotation. Youll never be able to go back to regular yoga class again once you do crow position toBusta Rhymes and Mariah Careys I Know What You Want.Clearly, people appreciated this new kind of yoga as after launching in only 2015 with the pop-up the brand will have 11+ studios by the end of 2018 (five studios opened this year alone) including two locations in LA and they a re looking for a new President/COO. How to Tell When Youre Investing in the Right Candidate - Spark Hire

How to Tell When Youre Investing in the Right Candidate - Spark HirePrior to extending a job offer to a candidate, you want to verify that the individual youre considering bringing on board is worth the investment. Spending time and money training this partie only to find that theyre a poor fit is a drain on your geschftlicher umgangs resources, as well as on your time. Before you make an investment you later regret, consider these questionsIs this person competent? While anyone can receive training, you want the person you bring on board to have a knowledge base on which you can build. If they walk into the office having no idea what their job entails, getting them up to speed will become a seemingly insurmountable task.Is this person serious about the job?Frequent turnover becomes damaging to a business, so look for a candidate who appears to be serious about the job and interested in what the company has to offer. Ideally youll choose someone who plans to stick with the business f or more than just a few months. Will this person fit in with the existing company culture? When youre hiring a new team member, you want to make sure that their personality will blend well with your existing employees and company culture. If the new person comes in and instantly starts clashing with veteran workers, youll find that the tension quickly becomes overpowering in the office. Over time, this can become a serious distraction. What is this individuals character like?A person can have training from the best school in the country, but if their moral values are questionable then youll quickly regret offering them a position on your team. Businesses of all sizes are destroyed when employees lack solid character and find it acceptable to steal, cheat, or take other actions that harm the well-being of the company. Before you offer anyone a job, make sure that youre comfortable with who they are as a human. What do they expect in terms of compensation?Have an honest discussion about c ompensation and make sure that what youre able to offer is in line with what the individual is hoping to make. If youre draining major resources to afford one persons salary, you could end up costing your business on multiple levels. Is this person a creative problem solver?Regardless of the field youre in, youll need your team to be able to face a less-than-ideal situation and resolve it in a way that works for both your company and your clients. Your new hire should have a good mind for resolving problems in a calm and efficient manner. When youre hiring, how do you analyze the candidates youre interviewing? Moreover, 65% said working with a coach helped them improve theirperformance at work, and 80% said it helped improve theirself-confidence.Why Hire a Life Coach?Even at a whopping $200 $1000 per month for a handful of sessions, it appears we may be more comfortable telling friends and family were seeing a life coach over a therapist.Todays culture shuns talk o f mental illness. We feel indulgent talking about things like depression,anxiety,andself-care.But without the right tools to manage these treatable issues, they show up in our partieal lives, in our our work lives, and can put a lot of strain on ourrelationships.Searching for amentorwho will help us conquer our fears, relationship problems, career setbacks, and provide us with a sense of fulfillment, weve turned away from therapists and have started seeing life coaches en masse. For that reason, life coaching has grown at lightning speed into a multi-billion-dollar industry over the past few years as thousands of people are hiring coaches for support in their personal and professional lives. Are you ready to hire a coach of your own? Heres what you need to knowDo I Need a Life Coach or a Therapist?Although the decision to see a therapist or a life coach is a deeply personal one, figuring out which one is best for your unique situation is easy. When looking to answer the question Why? a therapist may be the person you want to talk to. For questions like What now? or How do I change? a life coach is exactly what you need.If you are overweight and want to understand Why do I overeat? What fears are preventing me from exercising? What painful emotions am I smothering with food? go to a therapist, says DC based Life CoachSara Oliveri. If you are overweight and want to know How do I change? How do I develop a plan for losing weight and getting healthy? How do I prevent backsliding? go to a coach.A Life Coach is Hyper-Focused On GrowthBut what exactly is it that has made life coaching so popular? Coaching is different from therapy because it is hyper-focused on who you are now and who future you can be.Therapists reflect on past habits that may be destructive to their clients lives and focus on their clients building a greater awareness of the self. Life coaching is more action centered. Coaches focus on getting their clients to make changes in order to achieve what they want in their personal and professional lives.A Life Coach Will Partner in Your SuccessThe best aspect of good coaching is that instead of acting as a counselor to their clients, they act as a partner and motivator. They see through the excuses that you make and they hold you accountable. They see how you limit yourself to only doing the bare minimum and they challenge you to do more. Their motivation is what helps you grow and become the person you want to be.So why book a life coach instead of a therapist? Heres what a life coach can do for you that a life coach cant. What Does A Life Coach Do? A Life Coach Will Dwell on Your Future, Not Your Past.Sara Oliveri voted Best Life Coach by the Washington City Paper says an important thing to notlageice about life coaches is that they dont dwell on the past.Oliveri states, Although I do spend a limited amount of time looking back and helping clients understand why their fears, values, beliefs, and personality existmy goal is not to proce ss the clients past. My goal is to help the client become the best version of themselves.Instead of diving into every nook and cranny of our past, coaches are more focused on a clients future potential, development, and figuring out how to make the changes the client wants to see. What Todays Biggest Names Are SayingOprah I remember the very first time we had a life coach on the show. She shared with our audience a list and, literally, in the audience women booed her when she said put yourself at the top of that list. What she meant was put yourself at the top of the list and nurture yourself, honor yourself, stop the crazy mind chatter in your head that tells you all the time that youre not good enough.Serena Williams Life is so much bigger than tennis. Its the basic things in the little steps of life that we overlook. You should be the happiest person alive, because thats a gift in itself and Tony (life coach) helped me realize that.Bill Clinton He (life coach) has not only the gif t to inspire, but he teaches the most important lesson that every individual has to learn about living day to day, which is that you have choices in every circumstance. And you have to make up your mind on how you will respond to whatever it is that happens, as well as how you will make new things happen.Bill Gates Everyone needs a coach. We all need people to give us feedback. Thats how we improve. This article was originally published on Capitol Standard.

11 Things Your Manager Wishes You Already Knew

11 Things Your Manager Wishes You Already Knew 11 Things Your Manager Wishes You Already Knew When you enter the workforce, you’ll find that there are many things you have to learn- and unfortunately, most of them arent explicitly taught. So most of you have to wing it and stumble around for awhile, and make some mistakes. While companies could easily fix some of these issues with good onboarding programs, most dont- because they have forgotten what its like to enter the workforce as a new employee. Here are eleven things your HR staff and manager wish you already knew. 1. Showing Up on Time Is Part of the Job People sometimes think that a professional exempt job means that you can control your own schedule completely. While there are companies that allow a large level of flexibility around schedules, most companies expect you to come into the office by a specific time. Show up on time, ready to work. 2. You Need All of the Insurance Health insurance? Unless you have it from another source- like a spouse, you most likely wont find a better deal than your employers. Short-term disability insurance? Youll want that should anything happen- from car accidents to new babies. And long-term disability? Nothing is worse for an HR person than having to terminate an employee after a disabling accident when that person has no long-term disability insurance. The disability insurances are cost effective and are literally life-savers should you need them. 3. Your Manager Is Not Your Friend Some  managers may treat you like their friend, but they are not. They have hire/fire authority over you, and they have to tell you what to do and correct you when they are wrong. When you start sharing too much personal information with your boss, it can damage your professional relationship. If your behavior outside of work isnt something youd want on your resume, dont talk about it at work nor friend your boss on social media. 4. Take Dress Code Suggestions From Your Boss Seriously “My boss says my wardrobe needs upgrading, but I really like my style.” That statement may result in your career not progressing how you think it should. You  may be dressed according to the company dress code, but if your boss pulls you aside and says you need to change some things, you should change those things if you want to succeed. Bosses often say things like this to people they see who have high potential but are lacking that professional polish. (Now, of course, if your boss says, “you should really wear shorter skirts,” then head straight to HR to report sexual harassment.) 5. Bad Behavior Is Seriously Frowned On If youve developed your idea of the working world by watching television, you think its okay to have affairs with everyone you come in contact with, make crude jokes, and play practical jokes on everyone. But, none of that is true. Keep your dating life and your work life separate. Save your dirty jokes for your friends outside of work. And practical jokes? A little humor is fun, but dont do anything that could potentially injure or embarrass a coworker. Any of these actions can land you in hot water. 6. Everyone Has Grunt Work- But Especially Entry Level People Everyone has dreams of changing the world, but somebody has to do the tedious follow up with clients, put together information packets for the upcoming trade show, and clean the office kitchen. That person might be you. If youre new to the workforce, its likely the most unpleasant tasks will fall on your shoulders. This isnt discrimination and it isnt unfair. Its part of work. Demonstrate your ability to do the boring tasks and your boss will reward you with higher level work. 7. Put Your Phone Down You may have a nervous twitch anytime your iPhone is more than 3 inches from your hand, but youll have to learn to deal with it. Yes, you could answer work emails, but most likely youre not. When youre in a meeting, you need to focus your attention on the meeting, not on whatever message is coming in. Games? Social media sites? Texts from friends?  While everyone needs a break now and then, make sure that your breaks are minimal and nonintrusive. You may be able to think clearly while playing Candy Crush during a meeting, but youll look rude. Put the phone away. 8. HR Wants You to Succeed Sometimes work can feel like an “us vs them” scenario where the them is management and HR. You may feel like people are setting out to destroy you. While there are always some bad managers and some bad HR, in the vast majority of cases what they want the most is for you to wildly succeed. If youre wildly successful, the company will do better, and all employees profit from that. But, on a personal level, if you are successful in your job, your boss and HR dont have to spend time coaching and correcting. They dont have to take the time to put you on a performance improvement plan (PIP) or fire you. And, that means they dont have to replace you either.  Recruiting and onboarding take a lot of time  and cost the company a lot of money. They want you to be happy and successful in your job! 9. HR Will Keep Most Things Confidential- but Not All If you want to talk about how your mother has cancer, and youre under a lot of stress, HR is not going to put that in the company newsletter. Theyll refer you to the employee assistance program and encourage you to consider FMLA if you need to take time off to take care of her. But if you dont want your boss to know, HR wont tell her.   If you come and complain that your boss is sexually harassing you, HR cant keep that completely confidential. Why? Because HR has to investigate. Even if you say, “Bill pinched my butt, and I just wanted you to know, but I dont want anything done about it,” HR still has to investigate. If HR doesnt, the company is open to liability for Bills actions. HR can investigate some harassment claims confidentially, and some can not. If Bill pinched you, HR cant say, “Bill, we are investigating whether at some time and in some place you pinched someone.” If Bill, on the other hand, was watching porn in his cube, HR can just call up IT, and they will look at his records, and theyll take care of it- quickly. Your name wont come up. 10. HR Isn’t the Reason You Got a Lousy Raise HR might have coordinated the processes.Your manager was advised on how to approach the process, and HR even wrote the guidelines surrounding how money should be allocated, but the actual amount you received? That doesnt come from human resources. First, the amount of money available for raises is determined by the business- usually, finance plays the largest role in this. Second, your organization has to divide the available money among all employees, which means that no one gets a huge raise. Third, your manager determines an amount appropriate for you based on the budget, your performance, your current salary grade, and how close you are to the midpoint of the salary range. So, if you dont like your raise, complain to your boss. 11. HR Hates Paperwork, Too HR is constantly pushing paperwork at you but hates it just as much as you do. Some of it is required by the government. (Many businesses have to submit reports about race to the government, for instance.) The sexual harassment seminar you had to take and take a quiz as part of the session? HR does that because it protects the company against lawsuits. Every year HR will hound you for your open enrollment paperwork. Why? Because if HR doesnt, youll come crying to HR in January about how you dont have the right health insurance because you ignored the paperwork you received in October. If you do everything as soon as HR asks for it, HR will stop bugging you- and love you forever. Hopefully, your workday will run smoothly when you understand where your HR manager and manager are coming from. Theyre here for you. They want you to succeed, but they also want you to just follow the rules. Everyone is better off. - Suzanne Lucas is a freelance writer who spent 10 years in corporate human resources, where she hired, fired, managed the numbers, and double-checked with the lawyers.

Common Forms of Online and Digital Advertising

Common Forms of Online and Digital Advertising Common Forms of Online and Digital Advertising Twenty years ago, digital advertising was just a bunch of banners placed prominently on websites. They were annoying, you clicked on one in every 100, and they became the victims of banner blindness. Today, digital advertising is vast, with many different types of online ads being produced based on target audience, website content, and call to action. But before diving into the costs, and varying forms, lets take a look at the basic definition of digital advertising (aka online advertising). Basic Definition If you see an advertisement on the internet, then it is classified as digital advertising. In fact, there are ads on this very page, and most other websites you visit, as they are the primary revenue driver for internet companies. From banner ads (including rich media banners) to Search Engine Optimization (SEO), social networking, email marketing, online classified ads, site takeovers, and even SPAM, online advertising is one of the fastest growing ways to reach an audience. With the web now readily available on smartphones, digital advertising has spread to the mobile platform. Companies are spending millions of dollars trying to find a way to advertise on phones without creating an unpleasant or disruptive experience. So far, the most popular way to do so has been through native advertising methods (read more on that here). Costs Associated With Digital Advertising There are hundreds of different advertising models online, but most fall under one of the following three categories. Without a doubt, every ad you have seen online today was paid for by one of these methods: CPA (Cost Per Action): In this model, all the risk falls on the publisher of the ad. The advertiser only pays the publisher if someone clicks AND completes a transaction.PPC (Pay Per Click): The most common form of online advertising as it behooves both parties. The advertiser pays when someone clicks on the ad, but they do not have to complete a purchase for the publisher to get paid. Under this model, target keywords are highly important.CPM (Cost Per Mille): More commonly known as CPT (Cost Per Thousand), the advertiser pays for exposure based on visitors to the website and eyes on an ad. If a website gets two million visitors per day, and the ad is seen on 50% of those pages, then a CPM of $2 would be equal to $2000. Types of Digital Advertising To list them all would take forever, but here are some of the main ways that advertisers are getting to consumers with an online buy: Banners ads (These include skyscrapers, full banners, squares, and buttons.)Adsense (These are the ads served to consumers via Google, by showing ads relevant to the information on any page.)Email advertising (and SPAM)Native Advertising  (This continues to grow and dominate the online advertising space.)Facebook AdsYouTube AdsSponsored TweetsWebsite TakeoversRich Media AdsPop Up Ads  (and pop-unders)Pre-video adsBlogging Tips for Success in Digital Advertising Digital advertising is no longer a joke. Banner ads used to be laughed at, and emails were considered pointless and annoying. But now, with everyone absorbed in a smartphone or digital device, the advertising has to be done here. And that means it needs to be done well because it is saturated. Here are some tips to ensure your ad campaign gets a good ROI.   Make your campaigns shareable: Whatever you do, think about the impact it will have on the people who see it. Will they love it so much that they hit the share button and spread the word for you? Will they want their friends and relatives to see it? Will it go viral? A good digital campaign needs shareability to provide an impressive ROI. Without sharing, youre working too hard to get the clicks and conversions.  Do not think inside a digital box: A digital campaign is exactly that; a campaign that lives in the digital world. BUT, it does not have to be all digital. You can generate videos or film stunts and then put them online. You can have campaigns that utilize outdoor, guerrilla, and phone. As long as the campaign is tied together with digital, it can be created in any number of ways.   Analytics is key: You need to monitor your digital campaigns closely and be ready to act upon that information and course-correct at a moments notice. If some parts of your target audience are simply not responding, channel your campaign money into areas that are doing well. If you see negative reactions and clicks decrease, make sure you have a plan ready to go. The Problems With Spam You, no doubt, know the term  and are even more familiar with the actual product. Spam is derived from a classic Monty Python sketch in which everything on the menu in a small cafe consisted of Spam. This bombardment with Spam became synonymous with the way unsolicited emails bombard the inboxes of consumers. When email marketing was relatively new, Spam was rife. However, anti-spamming laws have cut down a lot of this traffic, with fines and other punishments being dished out to the guilty parties. It hasnt stopped it entirely, though, with Spammers becoming more sophisticated, and also finding ways past anti-spam filters. This is the junk mail of the digital world.   Another form of SPAM is phishing, which includes the vicious 419 fraud. However, this goes beyond the realms of advertising and into something that is both highly illegal and potentially life-destroying. Give Customers an Easy Path To Unsubscribe While on the subject of SPAM, do everything you can to make it easy for your customers to quickly unsubscribe from your email list. While it may seem counter-intuitive, you do not want to create a negative experience. Making it easy to opt out will leave the customer with a positive impression of you. They may well continue to buy from you, even though they dont get your emails. On the other hand, if you put the unsubscribe button in 6pt type in the middle of a bunch of legal copy, and make them jump through hoops to leave the list, you will lose that customer for good.

We highlighted the advantages of being a wells for Hobbies and Interests for ResumeEndurance sports : Blog writing â€" Have managed a personal cooking blog for three years, producing on average two posts per peek.Source: giphy.comTravelling - Shows curiosity and an understanding of different culturesIdeal for roles involving: travel or engaging with international stakeholders.Example: Travelling â€" Recently visited South Africa to attend an international conference on human aid.Source: giphy.comReading (include subject matter) - Demonstrates focus and background knowledge in a specific fieldGood for jobs in: Depends on the relatedness of reading the subject matter.Example: Business and financial literature â€" Have read several books exploring the causes of the 2008 financial crisis.Source: giphy.comThese are just a few of the possibilities for resu me interests/hobbies and how to use them. On the flip side, there are some hobbies that you should avoid listing under certain circumstances.Examples of when to avoid listing hobbies on your resumeExtreme skiing: Demonstrates risk-taking, which is undesirable in fields like accounting, teaching and health care.Stamp collecting: Can be perceived as outdated and solitary, which is unattractive to more creative industries.Watching TV series: Only relevant to positions in film or media. How to expand on the skills section of a resume with interests/hobbiesAs you write your resume, you may feel like you lack proof of certain skills. Or maybe you want to reinforce an item included in your resume skills section because you know it is essential to the role. This is where hobbies come in handy.Keeping with the logic of ensuring your resume hobbies are used strategically, try to think of ways in which you can prove certain skills through your hobbies.A computer programmer who has only ever wor ked as a freelancer and wants to prove teamwork skills would then want to highlight his/her participation in a local team or club. And even an experienced journalist with plenty of published work may want to include reference to his/her own personal blog when applying for a different writing job. What to call the interests and hobbies section of your resumeSo far we’ve talked about hobbies and interests as being combined in one specific section of your resume. But what to call it? The easy answer is to call this section “Interests,” but you can also opt for other labels, such as “Extracurricular” or “Personal Activities”. You may also choose to use “Hobbies,” but our view is that this word can lead employers to think that the content only has personal rather than professional relevance. The other thing to consider is what is listed under your interests/hobbies section and whether it overlaps with other potential sections. For example, our resume builder allows you inc lude a variety of section headings for “Organizations,” “Awards,” “Volunteer,” “Personal Projects,” and “Interests”.

Feeling Frantic Dont Make These Avoidable Job Search Mistakes

Feeling Frantic Don’t Make These Avoidable Job Search Mistakes Feeling Frantic Don’t Make These Avoidable Job Search Mistakes When you started your job search, you imagined it would take a few weeks, maybe even a couple of months to land a quality job. But for some strange reason, your job search has gone on way longer than expected- and you’ve got the eye twitch to prove it. So naturally it makes sense that you’re getting frustrated as your  fellow job-seeking friends have found employment and you’re still cranking out job applications. But these aren’t desperate times, and they definitely don’t call for desperate measures. If you’re feeling frantic about your job search, don’t make these avoidable job search mistakes. Check out these four avoidable job search mistakes: 1. You start applying for everything. You figure that you’ll up your odds of getting called in for a job interview (and get hired) if you increase the number of positions you apply for. So you start applying for everything- even jobs that you’re over- and under-qualified for- in the hopes of getting hired. Chances are that the job applications you’re hurriedly sending lack quality, customization, and passion, things that hiring managers look for when determining the job candidates they’d like to meet. You’ll actually have better luck if you send out less job applications, and instead focus on  tailoring  each one for each individual position  and conveying  your desire to work for the company. 2. You become aggressive in your job search. What, that employer didn’t get back to you after you submitted your job application? The nerve! So after waiting, oh, three days, you contact the company and demand to know why you didn’t hear back. Oh yes, job searching can bring out the beast in anyone, but you always want to maintain a professional and polished attitude when communicating with any company. Wait at least one week to contact a company after submitting an application, and make sure that you’re pleasant and upbeat when doing so. 3. You redesign everything. You haven’t heard back from any employers, and, well, you’re worried. You figure that there must be something wrong with your resume and cover letter, so you set out to edit them all. Sure, it can be irritating when employers dont respond to job applications, but the thing is, there might not be anything wrong with it. Of course, it doesn’t hurt to have someone (such as a friend or fellow colleague) take a look at your job application to see if they spot any glaring errors or inconsistencies. Sometimes, unfortunately, it just takes longer to find a flexible job that fits your professional and  personal needs- and you just have to hang in there. Which leads to… 4. You just give up. Maybe you’re just not qualified. Or maybe that employment gap  you tried oh-so-hard to hide is glaringly obvious to potential employers. Either way, you’re just so frustrated that you figure a flexible job is not meant for your future and you throw in the proverbial towel. But you can’t give up. There are a variety of factors that can contribute to your job search being sluggish. Instead of getting upset, use the time to make your job search work for you. Try attending some webinars or go back to school for a new certification if you discover that you’ll need it while perusing job postings. Stay social by connecting with friends and family so you don’t find yourself in a job search bubble. And remember, your job search will culminate in getting hired for a flexible job! It’s easy to feel frustrated when you have been searching for a while and haven’t gotten any job offers. But stay away from these avoidable job search mistakes, and you’ll have a happier and more productive job search! Readers, have you gotten frustrated during your job search? How have you handled it and job search mistakes? Let us know in the comments below!

What this ridiculously adorable dog can teach you about writing your best resume

What this ridiculously adorable dog can teach you about writing your best resume What this ridiculously adorable dog can teach you about writing your best resume Everybody needs a good resume- even if she’s not human.Mowgli is a beloved foster dog who was looking for a new home because her owner was moving away. Twitter user Megan Frantz tweeted out photos  of a resume yesterday for Mowgli’s application to be “Your Future Best Friend.”Mowgli’s resume is, we must say, impressive.Think about it: wouldn’t you want to hang out with a canine who is a  self-proclaimed “Certified Running Partner/Beach Babe/Good Girl,” among other titles, and reportedly claimed the “Best Dog Ever” Award for four straight years?Bask in the glory of the pup who is “75% German Shepherd, 25% Rwandan street dog, 100% Loveable:”Mowgli was seeking out a “new best friend” (or a pack) and a “long term foster parent.”Kelsey Finnegan, who worked on the resume and adopted the dog while working in Rwanda, gave Ladders a little more background. The dog has moved from Rwanda, to New York, to different areas of California.“She has lived a pretty extr aordinary life, and is a very happy dog,” Finnegan told Ladders. She also described how the resume came to be, telling us, “I wrote the resume and then asked Scott if he could help, who then added some great dog puns. I wrote it as a joke to convince my friend’s husband to take Mowgli, who happily accepted. In a sense then you could say she got the job.”Congratulations, Mowgli, you’ve found a home! But while Mowgli may be a dog, that doesn’t mean she hasn’t provided a teaching moment when it comes to resumes. We can all learn a bit about being our best selves.Where Mowgli’s resume really gets it rightHere are a few areas where Mowgli’s resume was truly effective, and a good example for any job-seeker.She maintains a positive attitudeYou can tell that having Mowgli around would probably be a good time by the way that this resume is written to highlight her proactive approach. Her “loyalty” and “goofiness” would probably bond you to her for life, and she doesn†™t shy away from the fact that although she gained 15 pounds from chowing down on “bones and treats,” she says she “managed to remain adorable.”She’s not afraid to show you how she shinesMowgli’s resume talks up her qualifications in ways that would make anyone beg her to join their team. More job-seekers should leave behind their false humility and talk themselves up in this way. With the use of terms like “extremely intelligent,” “fun-loving” and “incredible ability to zoom,” she seems like a great, collaborative team player, which is appropriate for her role. She also lists her many talents in the skills section- including her knack for different languages. How human applicants might do things differentlyMowgli’s resume, however, could be even better at highlighting her successes. Here are few things to consider the next time you reformat your resume.Don’t use photosYou can’t argue with the fact that in Mowgli’s case, images of her could definitely w in over potential foster parents and friends- but this doesn’t apply to human job candidates in the same way. We’ve previously reported that headshots should be saved for curriculum vitaes, or CVs, for jobs that aren’t in the US- or entertainment positions that require them. That’s because certain information that can be gleaned from an image could result in discrimination:  your race, your age, or any disabilities you may have. It’s better to keep pictures off your application - unless you’re an absurdly adorable canine, of course.Keep it shortGood resumes have one common bond: they are one page long at most.Mowgli’s resume runs a bit long at two pages, additionally making it more like a CV than a resume- The Balance reports that CVs are more lengthy than resumes, “at least two or three pages.”Don’t point out your ‘weaknesses’ and ‘reasons for leaving’While weakness may come up during a job interview, wait until they do and keep them off your resume. I t’s best not to give potential employers extra reasons why you’re not as strong of a candidate as others before meeting in person.Mowgli drew attention to a homestay that didn’t quite work out, and which would affect her future employability: she had to leave the Finnegan Home in Pleasanton, CA because of “irreconcilable differences with Cat.”Unless you’re going to be working closely with a species you’re fated to dislike, let your reasons for moving on to the next position emerge more organically in a conversation rather than on a resume.Don’t list your birthdayMowgli lists her birthday, something that future foster parents should know. Humans should steer clear of this, however, since it opens the door to age discrimination. The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA)  makes it illegal to judge employability based on age, and  Ã¢€œprotects individuals who are 40 years of age or older from employment discrimination based on age,” including current employ ees and job candidates. Check if it applies to your employer. Here’s how to respond  if age comes up in an interview, although we hope this doesn’t happen to you.Use more specific action verbsThere were instances were Mowgli’s accomplishments needed verbs as energetic as she is. Her resume says  that she “provided essential post-work debriefs” and  Ã¢€œensured treat time was administered on time and fairly,” which are vague and leave the reader with questions. For Mowgli’s next resume (and yours), it’s worthwhile to use punchy, direct success verbs instead  like “delivered essential post-work debriefs” and “Increased percentage of on-time treats through collaborative communication.”All in all, this sweet dog has a detailed resume that truly speaks to her vibrant personality. And guess what? The resume worked. Mowgli already has a new home, but she also got at least one job offer from Megan’s tweet- to star in a new Animal Planet show.

Seasonal Employment

Seasonal Employment Seasonal Employment Seasonal employment provides the employer with needed temporary helpers during high volume, busy times of the year. Employers hire seasonal employees to do the work necessary to supplement the performance capacity of their regular employees to produce products or serve customers. Examples of seasonal employment time periods and venues include: The fall and winter holiday seasons when customers flock to retail stores, restaurants, grocery stores, hotel banquet rooms, entertainment venues, and bars;Summer’s seasonal employment in resorts, outdoor recreation locations, and parks;Summers seasonal employment to replace the work of full-time, regular employees as they take vacations and catch up with family;Summer into fall when farmer’s markets open across the country, farmers harvest their vegetables and fruits, and food preservation is  in top demand; and Winter’s seasonal employment at venues dedicated to snow sports and recreation. Seasonal Employment Advantages for the Employer The advantage for the employer of hiring seasonal employees during their high volume, busy time periods is that you don’t have to spend the money to keep the temporary employees on your payroll year round. According to the National Retail Federation: For some retailers, the holiday season can represent as much as 20-40% of annual sales. This kind of volume creates the need for more employees than the employers can absorb year round. Employers also benefit from the fact that hiring seasonal employees also reduces the number of full-time, regular employees that they must employ to accomplish the work of the firm. Seasonal employees are rarely paid benefits, which saves the employer on labor costs given that benefits can make an employee’s compensation a third higher than just the basic salary or hourly wages. They also bring employers new ideas, fresh energy, and buffer the schedule for employee vacations and holidays. Seasonal Employees Are Covered by Law Seasonal employees are covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). They must be paid the Federal minimum wage  or the minimum wage that was set by their state or local jurisdiction, whichever is more advantageous to the employee. Seasonal employees can work part-time  or full-time. Employers are free to schedule employees who are 16 years  and older as needed by the business.  Federal law does not limit the number of hours or the times of day for employees who are 16 years and older. Please note that many states have more restrictive labor laws that give higher minimum standards that must govern employment practices. Take a look at the rules published by your state equivalent of the Department of Labor. Seasonal employees are entitled to overtime pay at a rate of one and a half times their regular rate of pay if they work more than 40 hours during their standard work week. This law applies whether the employee is a temporary or seasonal employee or a full-time, regular employee. How you schedule and pay seasonal employees may be affected by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare.  See more about how to  schedule and pay seasonal and temporary  employees including how to keep from paying for the health care coverage of your seasonal employees. How to Obtain Seasonal Employees Employers obtain seasonal employees by estimating the extra help they will need and then, posting the jobs using their normal methods for recruiting employees. Employers can contact temporary employment agencies to contract for seasonal employees. The agencies charge a fee, but some employers find the process less costly than recruiting, interviewing, and hiring seasonal employees on their own. People use seasonal employees to provide services or products to customers during high volume business times. They make much more sense than to employ people  who are  not needed year round.
